General John Whitgate's British and German army pushed deeper into Flanders after fighting several bloody battles with large French armies. One such army blocked his advance at the town of Ypres. In the following battle, the South Warwickshire Regiment was destroyed as its charge against German grenadiers on the French left flank was counter-charged by French gendarmes and dragoons; the Royal Horse Guards suffered heavy losses before being forced to retreat. After the British right broke the Swiss brigade manning the French left, the French army gradually rolled up and routed, and the French were chased from the field with similar losses to the British.
