The 1st Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army that was active from 1914 to 1919, from 1921 to 1930, from 1937 to 1946, from 1957 to 1960 and from 1965 to 1987. The battalion was raised from Newtown and Ashfield in New South Wales and served in the Gallipoli campaign before fighting in the trenches of the Western Front of World War I, lost 3,485 men during the war.
